About Etana
Business & brand
Etana is a truly South African company: diversified, innovative, optimistic and down to earth.
Our heritage can be traced back to 1938 with the establishment of the forerunners of the Fedsure General Insurance Company (Fedgen). In 2002 Hollard bought Fedgen’s insurance business and placed it in a specialist commercial division, Hollard Commercial and General (HCG), operating under the Hollard insurance licence.
In 2006, HCG merged with Zimisele, a black-owned underwriting management agency. The deal represented a first in black economic empowerment in the insurance industry.
Etana was granted an unrestricted short-term insurance licence by the Financial Services Board on 13 November 2007, and the merged business was transferRED to the new licence.
Around 150 team members with many years of experience were also transferRED, along with the tried and tested processes of HCG.
Shortly afterwards, the new enterprise acquiRED Fidelity Guarantee Acceptances (FGA), whose commercial crime business was incorporated into our product range.
Etana began operating with gross written premiums (GWP) of more than R600-million – hardly a start-up! Through sustainable expansion of our core business and the addition of a number of specialist insurance proficiencies, we have grown our GWP to R947-million (as at 30 June 2009).
We’ve also welcomed a number of newcomers to help power our growth, bringing the team to 220 passionate, committed and knowledgeable Etanans – reputedly the best people in the industry!
Our expertise covers a wide range of insurance classes aimed specifically at business. This specialist knowledge provides a solid base from which to serve companies of all sizes – from multi-billion-rand conglomerates to the family shop on the corner.
In a nutshell, we know business insurance like no one else!
