South Africans need to get fired up about fire, says Etana Insurance, which has sponsored the country’s only fire-focused website – http://www.firesafesa.co.za – aimed at taking the sting out of blazes for all who deal with, or are victims of, fire in South Africa.
In South Africa, fire incidents are much higher than the international average and there is a lack of communication on the subject. The Firesafe website was designed to promote dialogue, co-operation and consistency among all who deal with, or are threatened by, fire.
“Until now there has been no channel for dialogue between departments or companies involved in fire and rescue, safety inspection, passing of plans or insurers,” says Marcel Wood, head of risk management at Etana Insurance. Together with Marius Atterbury of the SAESI Technical Committee, Wood initiated the country’s first Firesafe SA conference.
“The lack of communication has serious implications for all concerned – including victims of fire, fire fighters and the public,” says Wood. “Without consistent fire risk management throughout the industries involved, our South African fire statistics are much higher than international norms and, as a nation, we need to correct this situation.”
In addition to improving communication and learning, the website provides wide-ranging information, tools, discussion forums and other support for any and all fire-related activities in the country, including rescue, plan approval, architects, the public, and local and municipal authorities.
