More than 70 years at the top

Etana’s heritage can be traced back to 1938 with the establishment of the forerunners of the Fedsure General Insurance Company (Fedgen). In 2002 Hollard bought Fedgen’s insurance business and placed it in a specialist commercial division, Hollard Commercial and General (HCG), operating under the Hollard insurance license.

Etana was granted an unrestricted short-term insurance license by the Financial Services Board on 13 November 2007, and HCG was transferred to the new licence. Around 150 team members with many years of experience were also transferred, along with thetried-and-tested processes of HCG.

Shortly afterwards, the new enterprise acquired Fidelity Guarantee Acceptances (FGA), whose commercial crime business was incorporated into our product range.

Etana began operating with gross written premiums (GWP) of more than R600-million – hardly a start-up! Through sustainable expansion of the core business and the addition of a number of specialist insurance proficiencies, we have grown our GWP to R2-billion (as at 30 June 2012).

Etana boasts an A BEE rating and an A+ Global Credit Rating. We are very proud to have been nominated as one of the top three insurance companies by brokers over the past nine years. In 2012, Etana was voted Best Corporate Insurer at the 2012 Financial Intermediary Awards.

We’ve also welcomed a number of newcomers to help power our growth, bringing the team to almost 450 passionate, committed and knowledgeable Etanans – reputedly the best people in the industry!

While Hollard is a 40% shareholder in Etana, Etana operates as an independent business.
