Etana Marine’s Colin Moodley was the sole African delegate in attendance at a unique marine insurance training course hosted by Swiss Re in Zurich, Switzerland.

From 18 August to 1 September 2012 Colin took part in a two-week experiential marine training course along with 20 international delegates. Between them they spoke 15 different languages!

The framework of the course covered numerous topics in the marine insurance field including:

Colin receives his certificate from Swiss RE

Colin visits Wärtsilä to see a ship's engine design

Colin and fellow marine training delegates

  • Marine Cargo Insurance
  • Energy Offshore
  • International Trade and Shipping
  • Marine Liabilities
  • Hull Insurance and Pleasure Craft
  • Marine Claims and Piracy
  • Re-insurance Basics and Pricing

The courses structure required each delegate to present an outlook on the respective markets in which they operated, along with an overview of the company’s they represented. Colin is a proud RED-blooded Etanan and used the opportunity to share news of Etana’s growth in South Africa and the various offerings we provide as the country’s only dedicated business insurer that works through brokers.

On the experience and learnings, Colin says, “When you are there you realise how small the world actually is – we are all connected by a common goal in the marine markets and are all governed by the Marine Insurance Act of 1906. It was amazing to hear the different stories of how various markets underwrite and how they handle claims. On reflection I have realised that we are all different yet very much the same. It was incredible to engage and develop relations with people from across the globe.”

Colin says one of the course highlights was a field visit to ship-engine manufacturers Wärtsilä. “The visit gave us insight into the incredible size of these engines and how much power they have the potential to produce.”

He extends his congratulations to Swiss RE for putting together a memorable and valuable experience in the Marine Insurance sector. The insights and value-add taken from it will prove essential for Etanans and for companies in the various countries that were represented.
