Etanans Aaron Mrabalala and Bruce Ceprnich help fellow participants overcome an obstacle during the Turbovite Jump City Urbanathlon
On Sunday 20 May 2012, the streets of both Durban and Johannesburg were busy, with two big exercise challenges taking place – the Discovery/East Coast Radio (ECR) Big Walk (Durban) and the Turbovite Jump City Urbanathlon (Johannesburg). Among the crowds were a number of Durban and Johannesburg Etanans eager for a Sunday workout.
The ECR Big Walk is annual event hosted on the streets of Durban that invites participants to walk along either 5km, 10km or 15km routes. Durban Etanans, along with family and friends, were kitted out in RED from head to toe and enjoyed both the vibe and the routes, which had the ocean as their backdrop.
Zuriel Naiker, from Etana’s Durban branch, said: “I am convinced it was a little more than 5km with the additional walking, but a great opportunity to get out for a uniquely Durban experience. It was great to meet new people and see some familiar faces again.”
In Johannesburg, Etanans and a couple of hundred runners, athletes and “Energizer Bunnies” arrived at Mary Fitzgerald Square in the city to take part in a truly interactive experience – the Turbovite Jump City Urbanathlon. The urbanathlon required participants to run 10km through the Joburg CBD – but each kilometre saw participants face an obstacle, such as some form of hurdling, running down a 10-storey parkade or jumping over walls.
For Etanans, the location was perfect, being down the road from our offices in Parktown. It also gave people the chance to breathe in and experience the city of Johannesburg like never before. Etanans took part in the team challenge, participating in teams of two.
Says Johannesburg Etanan Aaron Mrabalala: “An amazing feeling! The concept is classic, and what better way to do it than by exploring the city – I had a true feeling of pride whilst making my way through the city and facing the challenges with my fellow Etanans!”
Congratulations to all the Etanans, family, friends and people who took part, as well as to the organisers and sponsors of the events. Exercise is a key and fundamental part of any business and personal lifestyle – and what better way to do whilst in good company and having fun.
